Data structure is an important method for sorting and organizing data in computers so as to increase the efficiency of data access. In order to deal with a large amount of data, they are stored in the form of large databases or data warehouses and hence need efficient techniques to store different kinds of data for different kinds of applications.

These efficient techniques use the data structures like arrays, records, hash maps, tagged unions, sets, objects etc. Data structures are used to design algorithms, especially for manipulations with data like sorting, searching, and editing of structured data, etc.

The term data structure refers to a collection of computer variables that are connected in some specific manner which represents a higher level of data abstraction than information organization in the sense that it is concerned with the design and implementation of information organization. It forms the basis for the next level of data abstraction in information system: file structure or file format.

For the organization of mathematical and logical concepts, data structure provides a methodology and with proper selection of data structure, efficient algorithms can be designed. The major use of a data structure is its implementation in the programming language. Specialized data structures can be used for special purposed like B-trees can be used in the implementation of databases and networks of machines using routing tables.
