Definition: Slot

Slot is a small, specific period during which a commercial is aired. The free time between the programs are divided into slots for advertisement and are given for rental for that part of the time. Firms which want to advertise during the time period, book the slot by paying the money and air their advertisement. The slot can be available in TV commercial, radio, you tube or any other marketing channel.

Slot may also refer to the amount of shelf a retail store gives for a firm for its products. Slotting fee is the amount paid by the manufacturer of products to a retail chain for store shelves, making room in warehouse for their products, entering data in the inventory, maintaining the products in required environment, programming computers to recognize their products bar code.
