Definition: Attribution Theory

Attribution theory is a psychological construct that deals with individual’s interpretation of events and how this in turn effects their behaviour, perception and thinking. A person trying to figure out why another person acted in a certain manner may attribute one or more causes to that behaviour. The attribution theory was first propounded by Heider and then perfected by Weiner.

According to Heider a person can make two attributions:

o Internal attribution, the inference that a person is behaving in a certain way as a result of his personality

o External attribution, the inference that a person is behaving a certain way because of the situation in which she is or because the situation demands it.

In addition, our own motivation and emotional drives are also significant for our attributions
