Definition: Count

Count is a marketing jargon related to the Direct Mail method of media advertising. Bulk mails are send to the target or potential customers for advertisement of a product or services. The number of names on the mailing list that meets the selection criteria for the target market is called Count.

A number of mailing lists of the potential target group exists among which a subset can be selected on the basis of some attributes or behavioural aspect of the customers, which are known as Selects. The mailer utilises these selects to specify their target audience.

An example would clarify this concept. A mailing list that has state and gender as Selects would enable a company’s mailer to select all females from Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore. The calculation of the count is generally done by the mailing list owner’s bureau.
