Definition: Quota Sampling

Quota sampling is a technique of sampling extensively used in opinion polling and market research, where interviewers are given a quota of subjects of particular type to attempt to recruit.

  • The discretion of the interviewer is used while selecting the sample group of people for the research.
  • The most basic problem is that the sample is not random and therefore the sampling distributions of any statistics are not known

Example: - An interviewer might be told to go out and select 30 adult men and 30 adult women, 15 teenage girls and 15 teenage boys so that they could interview them about their television viewing.
