Definition: Visibility in Supply Chain

It means each goods in transit can be readily tracked from sourcing till its final destination by every stakeholder in the supply chain including customer. It’s managed with the help of technology and with the availability of data to everyone. It means everyone has complete view of the supply chain right from sourcing till delivery to customer. It involves in-transit visibility, production visibility, on-hand visibility and cost visibility.

The advantages of visibility in supply chain are:

• Minimizes variability and delays in supply chain

• Creates lean supply chain by controlling in-transit inventory

• Provides customer the right to respond and hence influences the effectiveness of supply chain

• Allows more cross-docking and improved flow in supply chain

But visibility requires extra cost of implementing information systems.
