Definition: Barge

Barge refers to a flat-bottomed boat meant for the transport of bulky, heavy good through rivers and canals. Some barges are self-propelled while there are others which need to be towed using towboats.

As a matter of fact, there were earlier barges which were towed by animals moving on adjacent tow roads.

Due to the high flexibility of railways, now the usage of barges is highly limited though in modern times they are used for the transport of heavy, bulky and low value items due to their low cost of transport.
