Here is a list of the top 10 companies in South Africa 2015. South Africa is one of the most prominent geographies in the southern hemisphere having a rich demography, geography & natural resources. With a population of 54 million and GDP (PPP) of $725 billion, it is one of the most powerful countries of the world.

10. Shoprite

With over 1649 corporate and 371 outlets across 15 countries in Africa and the islands in the Indian Ocean, Shoprite Group of companies is the largest food retailer in Africa.

The headquarters of this company are located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The Shoprite group of Companies has a broad customer base with about 28 million customers shopping at the Group’s supermarkets every month. In order to serve such a broad range of customers the Group has established different store formats that cater to different income groups. While Checkers, Checkers Hyper and House & home stores focus on the higher income groups, Shoprite and OF Furniture are focused on the middle to low income groups. The third format i.e. the Shoprite Usave particularly focuses on the lower end of the market.

It has four segments through it operates. These segments include Supermarkets RSA, Supermarkets non-RSA, Furniture and other Operating Segments. All retail operations under the Shoprite, Usave, Checkers hyper, Checkers, Hungry Lion brands in South Africa and other retailing products such as clothing, food, cosmetics, general merchandise and liquor are included under the Supermarkets RSA segment. The retail operations under the above mentioned brands and the same retail products outside of South Africa are included in the Supermarkets non-RSA segment. Brands like OK Power express, OK Furniture and House and Home trading in RSA and non RSA and retailing products like House appliances, home entertainment system and furniture belong to the Furniture segment. All other operations, trading in RSA and non RSA which are not included in the above three segments and include franchise operations as well as wholesale and retail of pharmaceutical products are include in the fourth segment called the other Operating segment.

Shoprite has a history of more than 35 years. Starting in 1979 with a small chain of only 8 supermarkets worth R1million it has grown through acquisitions and innovative and strategic expansions into a R82 billion worth of business today.
