Sainsbury's was founded by John James in 1869, London and is one of the largest Supermarket chain the UK with a significant market share in this segment. It has 3 subsidiaries- Supermarkets, Bank & Argos which serves more than 15 million customers in its 500 supermarkets and 700 convenience stores across UK. Sainsbury's offers a huge variety of grocery products and quality food, in addition to restaurants, pharmacies, delicatessen, coffee shops, meat and fish counters and petrol stations.

In any business, there are several companies & brands which compete with each other by offering similar products & services.

For any company to thrive, it is not only important for them to improve their own products, but to also look at what their competitor is offering.

1. ASDA:

With its headquarters in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Asda Stores was founded in 1965 when Associated Diaries of Yorkshire merged with the Asquith family (supermarket owners). After such companies as Allied Carpets, Gateway Supermarkets and MFI during the 80s and 90s. A 6 billion dollar takeover in 1999 by Walmart made it into a subsidiary of the retail giant, one of the largest in terms of market share of supermarket chains.

2. Tesco:

Tesco is one of the largest retailers in the world with over 7000 stores in several countries. The stores provide a wide range of products from groceries and clothes to petrol, software and financial services. Tesco is UK’s biggest supermarket with a market share of about 28% and one of the largest in the world by revenues.

3. Boots:

Boots is a pharmacy chain based in the UK. It was established as a herbal medicine shop by John Boot in the year 1849. It was initially named the British and American botanic establishment.

4. Morrisons:

Morrisons was founded in 1899 by William Morrison. Morrisons is headquartered in Bradford, United Kingdom. Morrisons' legal name is Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc and it is traded under the name ‘Morrison’.

5. Walmart:

Walmart is the leading Multinational retail corporation founded in 1962, and incorporated in 1969, it is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. The company is a family business because it is mainly controlled by the Walton family. Walmart company operates across the globe with over 11,500 retail units in 28 countries and as e-retailers in 11 countries.

6. ALDI:

ALDI is a supermarket chain that was founded in 1946 in Germany by 2 brothers Karl Albrecht and Theo Albrecht who started off by taking over their mother’s store which was started in 1913. ALDI stands for Albrecht Discount and consists of 2 main groups ALDI SUD and ALDI NORD, each owned by Karl and Theo respectively with independent operations in different markets. ALDI has transformed itself from a small business to a globally renowned supermarket chain with an annual turnover of more than $90 billion, employing over 1,00,000 people in its 11,000 stores which are spread across 20 countries.

7. Debenhams:

Debenhams is a British multinational retail company engaged in multi-channel business. The company historically operated in departmental stores format but has also ventured into online sales. Debenhams was founded in 1778 by William Clarke and it was renamed to Clark & Debenhams in 1813 when William Debenhams joined the company as a partner.

8. Amazon:

Having started its journey as online book seller, Amazon.com now can be called as global giant in online retail business. The founder of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos attracted towards growth of internet reach in early 1990s and started this business in Seattle in 1995. Amazon is now a fortune five hundred company offering ecommerce, Prime Video, Amazon Music, AWS, Amazon Pay etc.

9. Carrefour:

Carrefour, in French stands for crossroads, it was created in 1958 by Denis Defforey , Jacques Defforey and Marcel Fournier. It is the second largest hypermarket chain in the world in terms of outlets and revenues, only next to Walmart. The 1st Carrefour store was opened in 1960 and it was not a hypermarket, though in Europe they were the first to open a department store, a large supermarket, and a hypermarket.
