What is Skill Variety?

Skill variety refers to the set of various skill-sets which a particular job requires to complete the job role & responsibilities. Skill variety are essential qualities to carry out different activities for the job profile, so that the employee can use various skills and talent to complete a task. Depending upon the type of role, responsibility and company, skill variety requirements can be high or low skilled roles.

 

Importance of Skill Variety

Every job role requires employees to perform certain duties, have responsibility & accountability for their work. Under job characteristics model, the main characteristics of every job include skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy & feedback. Skill variety are the requirements for conducting all tasks under the job role. A higher skill variety will take an employee to a better role, keep them motivated, enhance their skills and keep up employee motivation. On the other hand, a low skill variety role can be monotonous, boring and can leave the employee unsatisfied & demotivated.

 

Examples of Skill Variety

1. High skill variety:

An illustration of a job with high skill variety would be of an owner-operator of a garage who interacts with customers, performs electrical repairs, does body work and rebuilds engines.

2. Low skill variety

An example of a job with low skill variety would be that of a painter employed in a construction activity to paint walls.
